Freelance Film/Video Editor
About Matt Dunlap…
Some parts Artist, some parts Entertainer, all parts Storyteller. “I’m a lover of picture and sound. All things abstract and concrete coming together to find that perfect rhythm. A dance of imagery & acoustics forever bound in the hopes of establishing an emotional connection with the viewer - and hopefully uncovering some laughs in the process too. Generally speaking, I’m a Film Editor.”
A native Texan with now 20 years of California experience (still can’t surf though), Matt moved to LA after receiving his film degree from University of Texas at Austin. Since then, Matt has been blessed with the opportunity to work with some of the top ad agencies in the world on many groundbreaking commercial campaigns such as Apple’s “Mac vs PC”, the iconic iPod Silhouettes & the Original BMW films. “I got my start under the guidance of the industry’s leading Editors and worked my way up through some of the best commercial post houses in LA. I found out very quickly that there was always something new to learn and that surrounding yourself with the best will also bring out the best in you.”
Over the years, Matt has had the pleasure of editing countless TV commercials, music videos, documentaries and short films and is always trying to stay keen on what’s new in advertising and film’s ever changing digital landscape. Whether it’s a traditional editing gig or something more experiential/socially driven, Matt brings an extensive post production background, healthy dose of enthusiasm and a thoughtful perspective to the table. As a storyteller, “ I’ve always been drawn more towards whether something moves you emotionally rather than analytically. Captivating and connecting people with stories they love is the reason I got into editing and a goal I strive for with each and every project that comes my way. I truly love what I do and I approach every project as a voyage of discovery for both myself and the viewer.”
For the last 10 years Matt has been editing out of General Editorial, a post production house based in Santa Monica. Matt worked with owner Noah Herzog to build GE from the ground up. “General has an amazing vibe. It’s not just a high-end editing studio but an incredibly versatile creative space that I was inspired to go to everyday. Whether it was traditional editing in the bay or some nontraditional foley work down the hall, there was always an injection of creativity as soon as you walked in the door. And some stellar coffee too. Generally speaking, weirdness was encouraged.”
Whether it’s a straightforward story, technically complex VFX project or an obscure grab bag of cinematic madness, Matt’s strategy is always the same - an acute attention to detail mixed with a unique sense on how to bring the concept to life. And with the onset of remote workflows, Matt is fully mobile and happy to edit on set whenever needed. Rumor has it, there might be some of his homemade fried chicken in the mix too.
